North Carolina Coastal Plain Ditch Types Support Distinct Hydrophytic Communities

چکیده
The drainage ditches of the North Carolina Coastal Plain retain ecological structural characteristics wetlands they often replace. We surveyed 32 agricultural, freeway, and forested ditch reaches across this region for hydrologic indicators, soil organic matter, plants. All showed at least some indicators had especially swampy forests. Twenty-nine hydrophytic herbaceous plant assemblages according to US Army Corps Engineers wetland delineation standards. These varied rich differed among site types, sorted influences including apparent human restriction vegetation growth, wetness, surrounding land use. results suggest that management can nudge agricultural freeway communities resemble those forests, which were typically more native. National Hydrography Dataset Wetlands Inventory excluded most sample sites, mischaracterized did include as natural waterbodies. This lack appears not arise from technical limitations; data tools resolve it are well established. ditches’ underrecognized but likely vast extent, wide ranges variability, response humans’ ability cultivate structure in these manmade aquatic ecosystems throughout beyond is already immense, with even larger potential.

متن کاملSoil physicochemical conditions, denitrification rates, and abundance in north Carolina coastal plain restored wetlands.
Over the last century, North Carolina has seen a severe reduction in the percentage of wetlands and a rise in negative environmental impacts related to this loss. To counter these effects, efforts have been enacted to mitigate wetland loss and create new wetland areas. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of hydrological restoration at several sites in the North Carolina coastal...
متن کاملNitrogen Balance for a Plantation Forest Drainage Canal on the North Carolina Coastal Plain
Human alteration of the nitrogen cycle has led to increased riverine nitrogen loads, contributing to the eutrophication of lakes, streams, estuaries, and near‐coastal oceans. These riverine nitrogen loads are usually less than the total nitrogen inputs to the system, indicating nitrogen removal during transport through the drainage network. A two‐year monitoring study quantified the ammonium, n...
متن کاملContinuing care retirement communities in North Carolina.
Over the next 25 years, the number of seniors in North Carolina will double. North Carolina ranks third among the states for in-migration of retirees, and the majority of these retirees are seeking an active, independent lifestyle with support services they will need.1 While it is true that an overwhelming majority of older adults live in a community without the benefit of any formal services o...
متن کاملGroundwater transit time distribution and mean fromstreambed sampling in an agricultural coastal plain watershed, North Carolina, USA
We measured groundwater apparent age (s) and seepage rate (v) in a sandy streambed using point-scale sampling and seepage blankets (a novel seepage meter). We found very similar MTT estimates from streambed point sampling in a 58 m reach (29 years) and a 2.5 km reach (31 years). The TTD for groundwater discharging to the stream was best fit by a gamma distribution model and was very similar for...
